Kinja'd!!!

Let me begin by saying there are a multitude of things in this world that I don't understand. For example, Meghan Trainor having a hit album, people vacationing in Siberia, Congress still being a thing, that shit baffles me. I mean these old white guys don't do a damn thing and we keep sending a lot of the same assholes back to Washington, it's insane! Anyhow, I have no clue as to why a lot of things happen and probably never will but one area where I'm doing my best to understand that which I currently do not is within the automotive community. I know choosing a car is a deeply personal process, one dictated by design preferences and budget but I still struggle to see how certain cars attract any buyers. So I am setting out on a mission to learn about some of these models and hopefully get an idea of what it is that would make a person exchange currency for a vehicle that in my eyes has no place on the road. First up in this series I'm calling "Why Would You Drive That?", the 2015 Lexus RC F.

Kinja'd!!!

The first thing I wanted to find out was what the F in RC F stands for. Lexus would like you to think it stands for Fast, maybe Formula, maybe even Fun. Though I could not find any concrete evidence suggesting otherwise, I think it's safe to say that the F does not in fact stand for Fugly as I had previously assumed. This bummed me out because I thought Lexus was owning up to their design language and having a sense of humor about the fact that their current fascia looks like a a mashup of Predator and a Real Housewives cast member. Turns out that's not the case, Lexus doesn't have a sense of humor, they're super serious, just check out !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Lexus is Toyota after sophomore year of college, they've got a new look, they know everything and they're just so damn interesting, just like the people who drive them.

Kinja'd!!!

So if it's not the style that lures people into driving a Lexus RC F it has to be the price right? I mean there are plenty of examples throughout history where people have chosen the less attractive option because it was fiscally responsible. How else could you explain the existence of beach communities in the Gulf Coast or Hugh Hefner's marriages? Humans have learned to tolerate a certain level of unattractiveness if it suits their financial needs, even when it comes to their vehicles. The thing is that the RC F isn't a bargain, not by a long shot.

The RC F starts at $62,400 and that'd be a fine asking price if it was a BMW M4. Sadly the RC F is not a BMW M4, no matter how much Lexus wants it to be. They can price it just below the competition, they can tout how it's faster around the track than the competition, they can brag about the manual transmission is superior to, oh wait that's right, no manual available. Well at least the RC F has a gorgeous and unique interior that makes the asking price more reasonable.

Kinja'd!!!

Pretty nice interior right? It's not really my thing but overall it appears to be a decent place to hang out while you leave the competition in the dust with your 467hp rocket. Except that the above picture isn't the RC F interior, it's the RC F-Sport interior. The RC F is below, why don't you play a game of spot the differences and see if you think that those, plus the 5.0L V8 justify a roughly $13k price bump. If the RC F can't make a compelling case against it's own sibling, then how can it be expected to do so with the rest of the market?

Kinja'd!!!

I really don't see how the RC F is a thing, probably because I haven't been impressed with a Lexus in over a decade. Many on this site often picked on Lexus for being clueless and not understanding their customer base, which to be fair is a symptom plaguing many companies these days. Their original customer base is aging and they're not sure how to attract a new buyers in an authentic way so they go with the tried and true, "make it sexy" strategy. The problem is that for the most part I think young people (18-40 demographic) are more adept at calling bullshit than ever and Lexus is a major offender in the B.S. department. Couple that with the fact that people have easy access to more information than in the history of humanity and you should have a well educated general public when it comes to new car purchases.

Kinja'd!!!

Unfortunately not everyone realizes that the all the information in the world is literally at their fingertips and so what do they do in their supreme ignorance? They drive a Lexus RC F. Honestly if you're not willing to plunk down the extra $2k for an M4 then you probably shouldn't be shopping in the segment to begin with but you so desperately crave that air of sophistication that comes with driving a luxury sport coupe. If only you could get over yourself and realize that there is nothing cool about driving a Lexus and there never will be.

Wanna be cool? Get a 2015 Ford Mustang GT. The two cars have a whole lot more in common than you would think and the hardtop 'Stang tops out at $46,710 with an automatic transmission and every possible option. It weighs less, costs less, looks infinitely better and it's made in America, the birthplace of cool.

Cheers!

Kinja'd!!!

*If any of the 14 RC F owners in the world read this, please do not take any of my words personally, this piece is meant to be entertaining, not slanderous and mean. I understand that Lexus has its fanboys whose taste for gussied up Toyotas has been lovingly passed down from generation to generation. I would love to hear what it was that made you go out and get this vehicle. The same applies to those of you with an RC F-Sport and now that I think of it, any Lexus made after 2006.

I've been interested in the RC-F ever since the first rumors came out and I've lusted for one since because my parents are really big on the reliability thing, and the RC-F is like a reliable RS-5 or an M3.

So that's the only reason I have. It's the closest thing to the M3 that's Japanese and reliable and that's why I want it.

Because not everyone wants a BMW.

Because Akio-san wants Lexus to be taken seriously. BMW makes their ///M cars hard targets to hit. But you'll never hit the target unless you try.

Go drive one.

Just like those who buy Lexus RCs or any of the other "gussied up Toyotas." Even though the only car that shares a platform with a Toyota is the ES.

Reliability. Reliability is why people would buy the RC-F.

Check out Steve Lang's article about long term quality on bmw. Apparently that much vaunted M4 is implode into a pile of expensive plastic parts right after the warranty runs out. Which not only means it's expensive to keep, it also means resale values are horrific.

Meanwhile the RC-F is pretty decent, looks ok and won't fuck you in the wallet without buying dinner.

Even if you aren't a fan of the current Lexus line, you have to admit these posts trying to rationalize why Lexus can't be taken seriously are growing old.

Lexus had a well-deserved reputation for a while. Not any longer. And people need to move beyond their preconceptions.

The RC-F is far and away the most appealing Lexus to me. I don't really mind Akio apparently suffering a blow to the head and suddenly deciding that Lexus had to stop being 90s Benz and start being Japanese BMW*, but Lexus isn't *quite* in my zone yet. Getting somewhat more there.

At least you can see they are making strides to shed their previous image.

They'll never move forward if people constantly criticize them for trying though. Instead of asking "Why?" people should be excited and be asking "More?".

I happen to appreciate the layout and ergonomics. They are not German.

Styling is subjective. The new corporate grille is certainly polarizing. Which is better than being invisible.

Also, those seats are probably second only to Volvo. Seriously they are f-ing fantastic.

I get the toyota reliability aspect.

It is just unfortunate that now that Lexus has figured out that the IS platform would be better suited to a coupe body-style, that they went and ridiculously over-styled the car like this.

The car has no aesthetic grace. The roofline is too thick, the quarter windows are too odd and bland, counter-acted by ridiculous chrome trim (what is it with Toyota and window trim??? new camry also...)

The hood is horizontal all the way forward of the front wheels, then bull-nosed.

The lighting is ridiculous, the grille is atrocious. the tail is bland and boring.

Why would you get that? I don't know how you can stand to look at it without disappointment.

There are gorgeous coupes... study them, and figure out why they are widely well received, and why they continue to be over time.

Because RC-F should have been the real deal... instead, it is a ridiculous mess, aesthetically.

It may be odd to think about the Mustang being a competitor, but a fully-loaded Mustang with all the premium stuff... might actually look better. Certainly cleaner, and not as much of a visual mess.

I am not sold on BMW cars recently, but a 2-coupe is a lot better. M-B C-class coupe may look like Accord coupe, but it isn't this messy.

And with the existence of the A5... there isn't a reason to tolerate bad design like RC and the recent Infiniti coupe attempts. Those designers have lost touch with proportion and simplicity for clean design.

If only there were a fastback hatch in this segment... a lift back makes so much more sense than a trunk lid... Like XK8 and Vantage V8, but $30K base-price to start.

Because it looks awesome in person. The almost cartoonish proportions, ridiculous paint colors, it's a cool car, like it or not. It's not as fast as a BMW but it's more ridiculous, and in a good way.

And yes, I would still get a Mustang, but after seeing the RC-F at the DC auto show , I am a fan.

If I was buying a new 2-door sport coupe, I'd likely pick the RC F over the M4. Sure, the M4 is probably a bit better of a sports car.

But the Lexus will not cost me the pain and suffering the BMW will bestow upon me. As an experienced BMW and Lexus owner, there is no doubt in my mind that Lexus ownership is much easier and carefree than BMW, bless their little German hearts.

And I'd rather slit my wrists than set foot in a BMW dealership.

Kinja'd!!! Funktheduck > Andrew T. Maness
02/09/2015 at 16:01

There are a lot of reasons someone would buy one.

1. They like the way the car looks. Just because you don't doesn't mean others don't as well.

2. They like Lexus.

3. They want luxury and reliability. I know several people who switched from either BMW or Mercedes because they got tired of spending so much money on a car only to spend more on it in the shop. Lexus is always at the top of the reliability charts.

4. They don't like the competition. Similar to 3 but may be for other reasons.

There are a few. Plus you answered your own question in the very beginning of your post. It's a deeply personal experience and people but what they like and can purchase.

Continuing beyond that, finding ways to insult people who like or choose to buy said car just makes you look like a dick which violates the first two rules of oppo.

There are plenty of cars that people purchase or lease that I don't understand why they do but I don't make long winded posts insulting them for doing so.

Kinja'd!!! Cixelsyd > Andrew T. Maness

I haven't purchased an RC, but I do drive an IS. If I were to buy an RC-F, it would be due to reliability. I've owned my IS for almost 6 years now (purchased July of 09), put 60,000 miles on it, and it's been in the shops for unscheduled maintenance exactly zero times to date.

People who want the best rocket ship may (rightfully) buy an M car. People who want a pretty darn good rocket ship they know will start every single day for the next 10 years may be swayed to buy the Lexus instead.

Given that new BMW vehicles are covered for 4 years/50,000 miles that's exactly how long I'd want to have it for and not a moment longer. I guess you can buy a Lexus with piece of mind and lease a BMW. I'm firmly in the lease new, buy used camp, especially given that cars are becoming computers with wheels and their technology is obsolete after a couple years.

There is plenty of room for Lexus to compete with BMW on performance offerings.

The invisible and criminally dull Lexus is gone. Get used to it. And maybe open your mind to a Lexus that makes fun cars. You'll be better off for it.

They obviously haven't followed Acura. They stuck an ugly grille on every car they made, and paid the price. Now Lexus is doing the exact same thing. The IS-F was almost perfect. It needed a little bit better balance, maybe a better transmission and I would of bought one over the M3. I wish there was one Japanese car company capable of producing something 90% as good as the BMW. I'd give up the 10% for reliability.

Considering that IS and GS share the same platform, and is a evolution of the previous generation, of course is a mashup of that platform.

I have long said that the IS sedan is too small to be considered by people who really need a sedan for carrying more than one passenger any more frequently than a rare occasion, due to the rear seats being so cramped. I looked at a previous generation IS, and with the driver's seat set for my 6'2" height, the seat back TOUCHED the rear seat base. No legroom. Not minimal, none.

Being such, why bother with rear doors, and shortened front doors? IS should have been an SC successor from day 1, more like a BMW 3-series coupe, and GS should have been the go-to RWD sedan under the LS, and aside from the FWD ES. GS is a better sedan in all respects that make a sedan body-style appropriate.

IS with tiny, unusable rear seats may as well have been a 2+2 coupe and convertible the whole time. With fewer doors, and less unibody weight, an IS250 RWD-6MT instead as an SC250 RWD-6MT would have been a GT86 before GT86 existed, with pretty much the same power-to-weight ratio and performance stats, and an SC350, or an SC-F V8 would have actually perhaps been considered against BMW.

And Toyota would have been that much closer with a shared platform, for a Supra successor to make a comeback with internal platform sharing, rather than now collaborating with a direct competitor, BMW, to make directly competing products.

LF-A has serious visual aesthetic issues, but the one thing it got really nicely, is the sleek roofline... RC coupe didn't get the roofline even close to right, and the hood line looks ridiculous in profile. It tries to make up for proportional problems by distracting the eye with ridiculous details like insane lighting fixtures and needless character line creases and vents. RC coupe is years late, and aesthetically very short of the mark.

It doesn't?

I'm just not the person to ask about hypothetically spending someone else's money and I thought I might direct you to someone who could answer your question.

If I wanted an n/a V8 sport coupe, I'd just ask daddy for more money and get a Suzuka Gray RS5 w/black optics.

With a small driver, the car weighs as much as a BMW 730D. Without a driver, it weighs more than an Audi A6 Avant Diesel. Put two small people inside = 2Tonnes. HOW!
How can you have a 2 tonne car in this day and age? There is so much plastic on this car, it is unfathomable, yet so much weight. It shares the same lines as an M4, but it seems it's only that. Sure, it has a V8, but so does the Mustang. And if you want to make it a GT car, then tone down the Toyota/Infinity front.

F is just like the name Lexus itself: made-up and designed by marketers to sound good to buyers. it’s meaningless and a blatant copy of BMW’s M division

how is this gorgeous or unique? it’s a flat slab of plastic with flat plastic buttons. i drove the sedan version, the is350 f sport, and the only somewhat neat thing was the gauges, which side to side depending on what mode you’re in. but after seeing it the second time it just turned into a cheap gimmick.. literally everything about the interior felt cheap to me, the fake leather, the screw-off shifter, the buttons, and the screen is about as outdated of graphics as they get. it literally looks like if sony tried to make a smart tv in the ‘90s..

the problem with lexus buyers is the only facet of quality they value is reliability. lexus does very well making cars and powertrains that can last decades with only routine maintenance, but every other notion of quality in their vehicles is a cheap facade. all other measures of quality, including performance, interior materials, structural rigidity, active safety, etc, are greatly outclassed by bmw, mercedes, and audi, and even cadillac now, and their reliability has also been greatly increasing as of late, yet lexus buyers have a one-track mind and don’t care about anything but the ability to last hundreds of thousands of miles without any repairs, even though they’re leasing the car for two years/24,000 miles... at our dealer it’s almost impossible to lure a lexus customer away from the brand. they test drive our models and absolutely love them, even giving reasons as to why they like them so much better than their lexus, then they go and buy an rx400. when you ask them why, they can’t say. they just had to go back to another lexus. it’s incredibly frustrating that people ignore true quality for a brand designed by marketers and built by the same company that builds the corolla.

they’re not they only car that shares a plaftorm with a toyota. the ct is based on the corolla, the rx shares a platform with the camry, avalon, highlander, and sienna, the is, rc, ls, and gs share a platform with the toyota crown. every single lexus car and suv is a shared platform except for the LF/A which is out of production now.
